Countless lives inhabit us.
I don't know when I think or feel,
Who it is that thinks and feels.

Written by Ricardo Reis, who was himself a creation of Pessoa's imagination;
one of the "countless lives" he called his heteronyms.

The Poet and Lisbon

In many respects, Pessoa was a poet of Lisbon. From his return to Portugal at the age of 17 until the end of his life, Fernando Pessoa barely left the city.

Imaginary figures, each with their own biographies, temperaments and literary styles, who conversed with each other and even praised and criticised each other's works.

If people get tired
Of being in the same place,
Why shouldn't they tire
of having the same self?
